Nascida no Japão, filha de pais americanos, Maureen Fleming traz a disciplina de uma clássica e a imaginação de uma iconoclasta à sua interpretação única do butoh. Fleming é inspirada por convenções do butoh, mas é mais interessada em eros, alquimia e espiritualidade do que em dissolução social. Sua coreografia enfatiza o alinhamento do centro espiritual do corpo e ainda utiliza o corpo feminino como um símbolo para os ciclos de regeneração da Terra. Fleming estudou extensivamente no Japão com Kazuo Ohno, co-fundador desta forma de arte minimalista.
Em transcendência lírica e escultural, Maureen Fleming inventa poesia surreal de movimento, curvando seu corpo em formas de beleza destruidora. A nova criação multimídia de Fleming, “Waters of Immortality”, é uma celebração sensória do arquétipo feminino, inspirada pelo luxuoso simbolismo do poeta irlandês William Butler Yeats. O pianista Bruce Brubaker executa a música de Philip Glass à medida que Fleming justapõe seu movimento singular com as projeções tridimensionais e iluminação brilhante de Chritopher Odo. A exibição fotográfica de Fleming, “Dances From Home”, estará em exposição durante o festival.
Waters of Immortality and Other Works
Waters of Immortality and Other Works is a sensuous multimedia celebration of the feminine archetype, inspired by the lush symbolism of Irish poet William Butler Yeats. In lyrical, sculptural transcendence, Maureen Fleming invents surreal movement poetry, curving her body into shapes of shattering beauty. Waters of Immortality and Other Works plumb the depths of human experience, touching the essence of our inner life and its relationship to immortality. Series of movements and scenic tableaux, inspired by Yeats, are combined with video, photography and music to create a work that invites audiences to join in Fleming's exploration of images that depict the idea of immortality. Crossing cultures and art forms, Fleming's new work asks the question: is immortality an elusive paradigm we await or is immortality present in the here and now?
Pianist Bruce Brubaker performs the music of Philip Glass as Fleming juxtaposes her singular movement with three-dimensional video projections, still photography and lighting by Christopher Odo.
Fleming’s Dances From Home photo exhibit will be on display during the Mercado Cultural.
